BFCSA: The Brotherhood of BIG GAS - inside the Turnbull camp

It was the kind of message from Canberra we really weren’t expecting – a bombshell straight from inside the Prime Ministers very own camp.

It seems that Senator James McGrath – Turnbull’s own numbers man for his recent leadership coup and the campaign strategist who delivered power to Campbell Newman in the 2012 state election - has now been hurriedly dispatched to Queensland as a forward scout with two missions: first, to find out how Turnbull has been received by Queensland – and the second, much more deadly strategy: to completely wipe out Alan Jones.

McGrath is a political strategist, head kicker and toe-cutter of the highest order: he previously worked with Lynton Crosby, whose company Crosby Textor runs campaigns for both APPEA and the LNP, no less, so it’s fair to assume that McGrath can be considered something of a Big Gas Brother, a true Master of the Mafioso.

Over the past few days he has been meeting with senior Queensland LNP party officials and members warning them that Alan Jones – one of the greatest champions the Australian bush has ever seen – must to be removed off-air as soon as possible, telling them he is a massive danger to the LNP – and that they must all pull together to have him wiped out.

Clearly, from the kind of desperate tactics being used, is clear that McGrath will stop at nothing.  What McGrath isn’t telling the membership, however, is the really big bombshell: that he is part of the Brotherhood of Big Gas – and that he has also worked closely with Santos.

In the period between his election to the Senate in September 2013 and his admission to the Senate in July 2014, McGrath happily packed his bags and went off to work for Santos .  There is no big secret in this: McGrath has it proudly listed in his own list of Parliamentary Disclosures.

The push of Big Gas and Big Coal to mine the prime farmland of Australia is now shaping up as the closest thing that Australia might see to serious civil unrest: there is the massive battle already underway to save the Liverpool Plain from Shenhua Mine, the BHP Caroona Mine and Santos CSG – and then there is the other massive ‘Western Front’ further north to save the Darling Downs from being consumed by New Hope Coal Mines and Arrow Energy, Queensland Gas (British Gas), Origin and Santos.

Added to the emotion, of course, is the fact that Origin was the CSG company whose brutal and relentless pressure to drill for gas on George Bender's farm drove the Chinchilla farmer to take his own life a few weeks ago.  If that is not appalling enough, there is also not much to admire about McGrath the man, we can assure you.

We watched him in action at the Lazarus Senate Inquiry in 2014, and his behaviour as the strategist of a pack attack by himself and three other LNP Senators – Senator Ian MacDonald, Senator Barry O’Sullivan and Senator Matt Canavan – against frightened witnesses as they attempted to give their submissions was utterly appalling.

In fact, we wrote about it at the time and said it was the worst thing we had ever seen in public life - a shameless attack on the entire parliamentary and democratic process. We have featured McGrath extensively on this page – along with photos of him mounted awkwardly on horseback – and he managed to achieve a little notoriety as one of our famously bumbling “Frackeroos.”

McGraths fellow Frackeroo, his close friend and Senate colleague Senator Matt Canavan, is also known to be closely aligned to Origin and its CEO Grant King.   While McGrath had worked for Santos and Canavan had his own intimate allegiances to Origin, neither Senator bothered to declare any of these connections to the Lazarus Inquiry.

Added to this was the fact that Senator Barry O’Sullivan – whose company Newlands (run by his son Barry Jnr) was making millions doing headworks and building man-camps for the Queensland CSG industry – also failed to declare his very considerable CSG interests to the Senate Inquiry.

Shortly after the Lazarus Inquiry concluded, Senator Ian MacDonald then distinguished himself by wearing an orange fluoro mining shirt into parliament to show he was sticking up for the Mining Industry. We have also featured that photograph on this page.

So with all four LNP Senators massively compromised by their sneakily undeclared association to the CSG industry, all of the witnesses called to give evidence to the Lazarus Senate Inquiry were simply used and abused in a massive game of political charade and cover-up.

It is clear that Big Gas now realises they are in serious trouble, that the Australian people have finally seen the light – and that ordinary citizens are now willing to stand up for the rights of Australian farmers.

In the meantime, we would like to express our deepest thanks to all the fair and decent people behind PM Turnbull who have made the brave decision that our farmers - and all the courageous Activists standing up for them - must never again be treated his way.

With people like you out there, there genuine hope for the Turnbull Government, and genuine hope that the senseless slaughter of our prime farmland can be stopped.
